Travel Tips
Provincetown and Cape Traffic Report
Traffic is a nightmare after holiday weekends and on Sundays in July and August. Leave in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid back-ups at the bridges. Or better yet, stay an extra night or take the ferry.
For information about traffic to the Cape and Provincetown, get the Cape Cod Traffic Report.
Route 6, which runs the length of Cape Cod, tends to be busiest on the weekends, and especially at the start and end of the weekend. If you must travel on these peak days, try to go against the flow by leaving early in the morning or late at night.
For information about traffic and weather while you are on the road, call 511 from your cell phone. Run by the state, 511 is available Monday through Friday from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on the weekends from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Parking
If you do choose to drive all the way into Provincetown, there are both private and public parking options, but neither is free. Parking can be tough in Ptown, so it is a good idea to stay overnight at a location where you can park your car.
The town’s main parking lot is located at the western base of MacMillan Pier off of Commercial Street. For information about current parking rates in the towns’ lots, call the Provincetown Parking Department at 508.487.7050.
Duarte’s, which is located on Bradford Street (between Center and Freeman), also offers overnight parking and can accommodate over-sized motor homes and buses. For more information about Duarte’s current parking rates, call 508.487.0113.
If you are driving to Provincetown, but do not plan on using your car after arrival, you may want to consider using one of the state of Massachusetts’ Park & Ride lots on the Cape. At the state-sponsored Park & Ride lots, parking is often free and buses can be caught nearby.
Four Park & Ride lots are located on Cape Cod on the route to Provincetown: one is in Bourne, two are in Barnstable, and another is in Harwich. After leaving your car, a Plymouth & Brockton bus can be caught from the lots for the last leg of your journey to Provincetown. For more information about these lots, visit the Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Web site. For more information about bus service, visit www.p-b.com.
